Today, the New Product Experimentation team from Facebook is launching Venue, a new iOS and Android app that brings passionate fans and expert commentators together to experience live events in a new interactive way.
Live broadcasts still offer the rare opportunity for millions of people to consume content simultaneously. Despite drawing large concurrent viewership, live broadcasts are still a mostly solo viewing experience. Passionate fans are constantly seeking better ways to engage with other fans and experts around their favorite events. Venue aims to give fans an interactive second screen experience, curated by experts and centered on the pivotal moments of their favorite events. To start, Venue will focus on improving the second screen experiences of sports fans, some of the most passionate fan communities.
We’re excited to announce Venue’s first sports partner, NASCAR. NASCAR has been one of the first sports to return to live action in the wake of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. With fans currently unable to attend races, Venue is an excellent way for people to experience NASCAR together and share in all of the high-octane action.
As NASCAR makes its return to action over the coming weeks, Venue will provide users with a unique and exciting way to connect with fellow race fans from around the globe – all from the safety and comfort of their own homes. NASCAR was built on innovation, and we couldn’t be more excited to help a great partner like Facebook’s New Product Experimentation team innovate around new platforms.– Tim Clark, SVP and Chief Digital Officer, NASCAR
Watch with expert commentators
Expert commentators — well-known personalities, such as journalists, current or former athletes, or aspiring “fan-analysts” — host a venue for each race. During the race, they’ll provide commentary, pose interactive questions and polls, and open up short chats, all around the specific moments in the race. Think of commentators as personal concierges for the main event. For the upcoming races, fans should look out for venues hosted by the social media personality, nascarcasm from NASCAR.com, FOX Sports NASCAR reporter Alan Cavanna, and NASCAR driver Landon Cassill. Each venue will offer a unique take on the race and fans can easily join multiple to get different takes on the race.
Focus on the moments that matter
Venue is designed so that fans can split their attention between the race and their phones better than they can today. Venue does this by allowing commentators to create “Moments” — short-lived digital opportunities for fans to connect — whenever they think something memorable or interesting is happening on the track. Fans are notified whenever a new Moment is created so that they can hop in and out of Venue if they want to. With Venue, fans can stop scrolling or searching to find the exact moment everyone is reacting to.
Join other passionate fans
Venue is one way for fans to connect with other passionate fans who share their love for the sport, team, or rivalry. We believe that Venue can help fans feel the energy of watching live events alongside other fans.
Venue is available on iOS and Android in the United States. NPE apps are experimental, subject to change (see more about NPE’s approach here), and adhere to Facebook’s Terms of Service, Data Policy, and NPE Team Supplemental Terms.
